On October 17, 2017, members of Canada’s national non-profits and charities descended on the hill for the annual Charities on the Hill day of advocacy. The day allowed sector leaders to meet with Members of Parliament to discuss important sector issues such as legislation affecting registered charities and the limitations for social enterprise.

“It was a day of raising our profile and awareness about the non-profit and charitable sector,” said Paula Speevak, Volunteer Canada’s President and CEO. “As national non-profits and charities, we work together all year to strengthen and support our communities. This day is a chance for us to share our success stories with MPs and ask for their support and expertise in building a better environment for Canadian charities.”

Volunteer Canada spoke with MPs in support of the motion put forth by the Honorable Senator Terry M. Mercer in May 2017 requesting the establishment of a Special Committee on the Charitable Sector. The Special Committee would convene to “examine the impact of federal and provincial laws and policies governing charities, non-profit organizations, foundations, and other similar groups; and to examine the impact of the voluntary sector in Canada.”

We already know some of the huge impact of volunteers in Canada. For example, we know that the philanthropic sector draws on over 2 billion volunteer hours, which is the equivalent of over 1 million full-time jobs in Canada.

Volunteer Canada is proud to advocate on behalf of ourmembers and the sector.See Charitieson the Hill meeting highlights here: https://twitter.com/hashtag/weAdvocate?src=hash
