For three years, Synopsys and Volunteer Canada have worked together to create purposeful volunteering experiences, activating employees across Synopsys’ Canadian offices in Ottawa, Calgary, Nepean, Mississauga, and Markham. With a commitment to employee-supported volunteering (ESV), the Synopsys for Good program managed by their social impact team, has steadily increased the number of projects to get more employees involved and make a bigger community impact in Canada. Building on a strong foundation of collaboration, this year Synopsys extended its partnership with Volunteer Canada to include impactful volunteer opportunities for interns.
In 2024, Volunteer Canada connected employees with six impactful projects tailored to local community needs during Synopsys’ month-long volunteer program “Season of Service”.
2024: Purpose-Driven Action in Communities Where Synopsys Employees Live and Work
From building kits to preparing meals and beautifying outdoor spaces, Synopsys employees showed up with energy and compassion to support diverse causes across Canada.
In Mississauga, the team partnered with Eden Food for Change, preparing 224 turkey meals for food bank members. These meals, designed for families with limited cooking facilities, provided a hot and nutritious option during challenging times.
“Even though we were all hungry from the smells of the food we prepared, we were filled with joy for helping so many people to get a healthy meal,” shared Sharon, a Synopsys employee in Mississauga.
In Markham, volunteers collaborated with Yellow Brick House, a shelter supporting survivors of domestic violence. The team tackled yard cleanup, removing 3,000 lbs of debris to create a more welcoming environment for residents and their children.
At Ottawa’s YMCA Bonnefant Outdoor Centre, employees revitalized the camp by landscaping 4,000 square feet, painting cabins, and deep-cleaning communal spaces. These efforts ensured the center remained an inspiring space for youth and families.
Each of these moments reflected provided meaningful, local engagement that left a tangible impact.
Season of Service and Beyond
This year, Synopsys extended their Season of Service efforts to engage summer interns in hands-on volunteering, facilitated by Volunteer Canada. Interns at four offices participated in kit builds supporting at-risk youth:
- In Markham and Mississauga, interns packed 216 and 264 kits, delivering much-needed personal care items to youth served by 360 Kids.
- In Ottawa/Nepean, interns packed 240 kits, providing essential support to transient youth with Operation Come Home.
In total, Synopsys interns packed 720 kits, directly supporting over 600 vulnerable youth across Canada.
These initiatives address systemic barriers to youth wellness, education, and empowerment, highlighting the importance of volunteerism as a sustainable and robust approach to building awareness and new lenses in tackling complex social challenges.
A Partnership Rooted in Co-Creation
The partnership between Synopsys and Volunteer Canada is built on a vision—designing programs that create lasting value for employees, local communities, and the charities they support. Each activity is carefully designed to align with Synopsys’ goals while addressing critical needs of Canadian charities.
“At Synopsys, our global commitment to generate positive community impact drives us to invest in meaningful partnerships like the one we’ve built with Volunteer Canada, through Points of Light. Their expertise and trusted leadership have helped us grow our employee-supported volunteering programs in Canada, creating impactful opportunities that align with our values and global initiatives. It has been exciting to see how this collaboration has evolved as we deepen our investment in communities where our teams live and work,” says Nancy Wall, Synopsys Social Impact team at Synopsys.
“Synopsys is committed to building stronger communities through service. It’s a privilege to work with their teams here in Canada,” adds David Vandenberg of Volunteer Canada. “This partnership exemplifies how corporate volunteering can drive meaningful change while also cultivating employee pride and purpose.“
This work also amplifies the broader mission of Volunteer Canada. As the only national organization focused on volunteerism, Volunteer Canada’s collaborations not only strengthen local communities but also bolster an ecosystem of over 1,100 members nationwide!
The Ripple Effect: Measurable Impact
This year alone, Synopsys employees in Canada contributed 278 hours across six projects, engaging 103 volunteers. Beyond the numbers are the lives impacted: families fed, youth empowered, and safe spaces restored.
Through projects like meal preparation, kit building, and outdoor revitalization, Synopsys has created a ripple effect of good that will be felt for months and years to come.
