An important message from Nancy Averill, exiting Chair of the Canada’s Volunteer Awards’ National Advisory Committee
It’s important to recognize and celebrate volunteers in Canada because they’re really the best of our citizens.
My name is Nancy Averill and I’m the former Chair of the National Advisory Committee on Canada’s Volunteer Awards.
We’re lucky enough to live in a country that provides us with healthcare, education, social services, but it’s really volunteers that fill in the gaps, enrich these programs and define us as caring Canadians.
The National Advisory Committee is a group of fifteen people who advise the Minister on recipients of Canada’s Volunteer Awards. We’ve either been volunteers in our communities or worked for organizations that are involved with volunteers, so we all have a history with volunteering.
When I see a nominee who has worked tirelessly for twenty years to achieve something for the benefit of their community, I can certainly empathise with the amount of effort that has gone into that.
It’s your opportunity to really recognize and celebrate the best volunteers that Canada has, so it is very rewarding.
Please apply wherever you live—rural Canada, small town Canada, metro Canada—because if you volunteer, if you are actively involved in your community, you have the skill set to contribute to the committee.
So please everyone, go ahead and apply. You’ll have lots of fun. You’ll enjoy yourself.
